HDD LED Tutorial (Quick and Easy)

Want to add a small, unique feature to your Xbox, but don't know how? Well, here's how!

WARNING! I WILL NOT BE RESPONSIBLE IF YOU DAMAGE YOUR XBOX, YOURSELF, OR ANYTHING ELSE.

Anyways, this is really easy to do ^_^

Time required, 5-10 min.

Tools required:

1-LED of your choice (blue, red, etc)

   1-100 ohm resistor

   Wire-Enough to place where wanted

   Soldering Iron, solder, etc.

And now, how to do it!

1: Solder the resistor to the positive leg of the LED.

2: Solder wire to the resistor. This wire will then be soldered to the red wire going to the HDD.

*Note: Make sure you secure all connections with tape, shrink-tubing, etc.

   3. Now you have 2 choices, solder a wire from the ground leg directly to the motherboard (not recommended for beginners), or splice into the IDE cable, wire 39 (easiest). Here’s how for both...

a). Soldering to the motherboard is dangerous, only recommended for people who have sufficient soldering skills. Solder the wire to the pin marked with a red circle…

b). Splicing into the IDE cable is the easiest, faster, and quicker than soldering to the motherboard. Locate along the wire where you want to solder. Look at the cable’s RED wire, go to the other side (with no red wire) and count in one. This is pin 39 (Red indicates 1). Take a razor blade and cut along both sides of it in the groove between wires, being careful not to cut any other wire. Then using a hot soldering iron, melt away the plastic, exposing the wire. Solder to this and tape up the connections.

4. Place the LED wherever you wish. Usually, the modder drills a hole, fills it with hot glue, and places the LED behind it. Also, you could just drill the hole and slide the LED through.

Congratulations! You're done!

Note: Your LED may glow dimly when there's no activity, this is normal.
